A pleasant journey
Sierra de la Demanda lies more than two thousand kilometers above the La Rioja and Castilla y Leon regions. The Sierra de la Demanda mountains are of a rigid beauty and tourists love the region, especially the ones who enjoy climbing, hiking and paragliding. In fact, a big area of the western slope is designated as a State Reservation for use by sports enthusiasts. In addition, the Saint Jacob’s road passes through Sierra de la Demanda beyond the northern peaks.
Interesting things to do in Sierra de la Demanda
Tourists who go to Sierra de la Demanda to spend time in nature have several trails to choose from. Almost all of these trails start from Burgos, the western slope, and pass through villages like Pradoluengo, Pineda de la Sierra, Quintanar de la Sierra, and Niela. If you are in Niela, take full advantage of the sightseeing opportunities. You can easily reach the Parque Natural de las Lagunas from here. The Park is famous for a succession of lakes situated at high altitudes which form beautiful cascades in the more humid seasons. The Riojan slope is covered with pine woods and it attracts tourists in the winter, especially in San Lorenzo.
The Ezcaray Ski resort is located here, situated at an altitude of 2,271 meters, the perfect place for those who love winter sports. Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a pilgrimage destination; it was built on the same site where a Riojan saint, Saint Domingo, built a shelter for those in need. The Cathedral, built in a Romanic architectural style and finished just before his death, is filled with Baroque decorations. Southwest of Santo Domingo lies San Millan de la Cogolla, whose name originates from that of a Benedictine hermit monk who lived in the 6th century and who is thought to have prevented the entrance of the Moors into these territories. The Mozarabic Suso monastery, built in the 10th century, sits above the cave where the monk San Millan found shelter in his tumultuous life.
